California Winner

Finally, twenty-four hours after the race was slated to begin, we have a winner at California!  Carl Edwards Jr., whom we got to see do his signature backflip from his in-car camera.

Edwards was dominant in the last segment of the race, passing Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon, who finished second and third, respectively.

Gordon was definitely a dominant car throughout the race, yet in the post-race interview Jeff stated that his car “blew up” on the last lap.  He still finished third!

Now to watch the Nationwide race, which airs at 5 p.m. ET on ESPN2.  Carl Edwards Jr. is one of several Cup racers who will also be driving in the Nationwide race.  I wonder how that will affect their performance?

Rain, Rain, Go Away

I’d be willing to bet that the drivers are heartily sick of California and more than ready to go home, even though they’ve hardly raced a lap. First it’s the rain delays, then red flag delay while they clean up the track from accidents. Many drivers are complaining about the track conditions. I somehow doubt the Nationwide race will be run tonight, even if they eventually are able to complete the Sprint race.

Daytona Thoughts

Isn’t it interesting that we did not hear race winner Ryan Newman’s name mentioned during race week as a potential winner?  Winning the 50th running of the Daytona 500 was a fantastic way to end his long dry spell.

Of all the Hendrick’s cars, only Junior fared well.  I certainly hope that is just a fluke and not an indication of future problems.  Gordon was running well, though, until he had that suspension issue.

It certainly was an interesting start to this 2008 season.
